Comprehensive Approach to Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for
Substance Use Disorders

Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) is a recognized evidence-based treatment approach primarily used in the treatment of opioid and alcohol use disorders. MAT uses medications like buprenorphine, naltrexone and Vivitrol – in combination with counseling and other therapeutic techniques, to provide a "whole-patient" approach to the treatment of substance use disorders. The goal of MAT is to reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms that contribute to relapse while addressing the psychological and behavioral aspects of addiction. MAThas been shown to improve treatment engagement, improve social functioning,  reduce use and reduce death by overdose.
